This Household Personal Gaming of the Year Roundup for 2025
Well, how was this year in your home? Did it seem truly wonderful as one might claim on Facebook? Packed with A-grades for the children and elaborate themed fancy dress gatherings for the grownups? Maybe it felt like a swamp of letdowns with only sporadic fun moments? And was any of it actually real, or have we all become AI-generated virtual entities with celebrity dental work?
I have gathered everyone together, willing or unwilling, to debate the most important thing in any given year: which video games we played the most. Without further ado:
Game Eldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"It’s not my games column."
Meanwhile, on mobile, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "trying to find adequate healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In the actual world."
Game Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. I respect that.
Title Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into theatre school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was playing Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with far better healthcare than her eldest sister has outside the game.
Release the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Game I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am behaving this way to prepare him so he can mature and play games for grownups. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is unstoppable. Even better than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted card game digital pastime, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that frequently update their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to trap you with compulsion-based microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a classic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the start. I wish I could deal with my issues so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just was short on the mental bandwidth to give it what it required earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the late night after evening drinks.
Title That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was 2024’s sleeper hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Its gameplay loop is a wonderful concept, but the abilities behind the different wild cards are so creative it has become a game I could play at any hour. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an absolute pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Title I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a bit of backlash when I critiqued how a specific bug in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I appreciated even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that verbatim, because I appreciate the effort, and he is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard Metroidvania-esque thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". What a joy. I get that it looks ace and is ideal if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and high launch costs. Both difficult to justify and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names shouted from the doorstep at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or phone use, but it aches like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
