The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
