The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
