The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.

“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
