New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities released security footage Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
