Condemnation Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Criticism
Individuals from across the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
This is a disgusting and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. She pointed to previous comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from Within Party
Some Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his party to justify the statements.
The Director's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of a different political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
