American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to climate and other issues.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy said he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," he remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure another source of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be held up due to a lack of employees - among the peak since the closure started.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," the official stated.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the authority said DFW, the second most active airport in the US, could experience problems from low staffing later in the day.

The agency warned passengers in California to consult airlines about updated departure times.

The issue precedes the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in LA on Monday evening, and about one month before the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to travel by air in the US.

Pressure on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.

It prompted a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as leader, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
