An informant has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities abandoned sensitive technology enabling the Taliban to locate Afghans who collaborated with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger

The whistleblower, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the information breach were instructed to change residences and change their contact details to avoid detection from militant forces.

Lawmakers are investigating the Conservative government's response of a massive leak of personal details affecting nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to move to the United Kingdom to avoid the Taliban.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A data file with confidential details, such as identities, contact details and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by an official working at British military command in early 2022.

The breach was discovered in late 2023, when identities of several individuals who had requested to settle in the UK appeared on online platforms.

Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban do not have the same sort of facilities that we have,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.

Consequences of the Data Breach

Initial findings presented to the inquiry indicated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A legal restriction regarding the incident was put in force in August 2023 and blocked relevant facts about it from being made public until mid-2025.

Security Recommendations

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the aid group she was working with told Afghan families they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they change residence where feasible and changed their phone numbers. Those were the primary information that, if authorities had access to these details, would lead to identification and capture,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

The source contested that an official review conducted by an ex-government employee had been wrong to state that the obtaining of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these Afghans are in hiding from militant forces; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves their previous employment.”

The source explained terrible abuse experienced by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of young kids who have had bones crushed to force households to say where someone is,” she testified.
